What is Massage Therapy according to the American Massage Therapy
Association?
- MASSAGE THERAPY
is a profession in which the practitioner applies manual techniques,
and may apply adjunctive therapies, with the intention of positively
affecting the health and well-being of the client.
- MASSAGE
is manual soft tissue manipulation, and includes holding, causing
movement, and/or applying pressure to the body.
- THERAPY
is a series of actions aimed at achieving or increasing health
and wellness.
- MANUAL
means “by use of hand or body”.
Massage is a recognized,
effective treatment for many health conditions. Muscle tension and
soft tissue disorders place strains on the body, reduce healthy
circulation, and disrupt normal nerve function.
There are many types of therapeutic massage and bodywork to address
these conditions, as well as to promote overall relaxation. At Marshall’s
Massage Therapy and Fitness, we are professionals who are licensed
to use a variety of techniques to help you achieve your individual
health and fitness goals:
- Swedish Massage
- Sports Massage
- Shiatsu
- Reflexology
President of Marshall’
Massage Therapy, Marshall Jones is a native Texan from Dallas and
a registered massage therapist with over seven years of experience.
In addition to individual massage sessions, we offer group clinics,
event massage, and educational programs in concert with National
Academy of Sports, Massage School and other local practitioners.
SWEDISH AND DEEP-TISSUE MASSAGE
Swedish and deep-tissue massage currently represents the Western
"standard" for massage. When you hear about getting a massage, you're
probably hearing the description of Swedish massage or a derivative.
The Massage Therapists at Marshall’s Massage Therapy have received
initial training in Swedish massage techniques and then use this
as a basis for progressing to more advanced techniques such as Shiatsu
and reflexology.
Basic Swedish massage represents the most common form of massage
in the United States.
Marshall's Massage Therapy's licensed therapists frequently develop
their own unique styles of massage based on the fundamental Swedish
moves, which consist of 5 strokes:
- Effleurage -
gliding
- Petrissage -
kneading
- Friction - rubbing
- Tapotement -
pounding
- Vibration - shaking
Each type of stroke
offers different benefits with many variations. Our licensed therapists
often focus on client relaxation using this technique, relying mostly
on gliding and kneading strokes, as well as oils and lotions.
DEEP-TISSUE MASSAGE
Deep tissue massage is an advanced form of Swedish massage using
deep-tissue techniques which involve slow strokes, direct pressure,
and friction. A session consists of greater pressure to deeper layers
of muscles than typical Swedish massage. Deep-tissue massage goes
beyond the original concepts of Swedish massage. It consists of
slower strokes, more pressure, and deeper friction. Most of the
strokes, however, remain fundamentally the same as with more superficial
Swedish massage. Deep-tissue massage targets deeper muscle groups
than Swedish massage. Therapists also use deep-tissue massage to
help break up scar tissue. Deep-tissue massage can be less comfortable
to the client, but not necessarily more effective. Depending on
the goals of the session, simply using more pressure will not necessarily
improve the functional outcome and results.
SPORTS MASSAGE
Deep tissue massage is most often used in sports massage. This technique
represents massage adapted to the needs of the athlete. It focuses
on techniques for maintenance, event preparation, and injury recovery.
Through his certification with the National Academy of Sports Medicine,
Marshall Jones understands the need of an athlete to perform at
peak level and can help you achieve this through massage therapy.
SHIATSU
Flexibility represents the ability of muscles and other soft tissues
to lengthen and shorten through their intended range of motion (ROM).
Active movement through a full ROM helps to improve circulation,
nourish joints, and relieve the pain of soft-tissue adhesions. Stretching
helps to maintain or restore flexibility and ROM, thus, improving
your flexibility to obtain a full ROM and generally providing greater
fitness. |
